Event description
Our Thursday, October 21, Virtual Post Meeting will be on "Today's Construction Economy."

About this event

Our speaker is Tom Sanders, CCEA, CBA, the lead economist for MOCA Systems, Inc. MOCA is a leading owner’s representative firm providing program and project management services nationally through an early project definition approach that aligns quality, scope, cost, risk and schedule during design, construction, and occupancy phases of a project. MOCA supports the expectations of owners and project stakeholders by using our project control services and delivering projects that come in on time and on budget.

Tom provides independent market analyses for Military Construction projects and special cost and economic analyses for the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment. Recent projects include the “Market Construction Cost Study of Hurricane Impacts” (April 2018); the “Tyndall AFB Reconstruction Market Assessment Post-Michael” (2019); the “Cybersecurity Cost Study” (2020); the “Requirements Analysis for a Parametric Cost Estimating System for Environmental Cleanup (2020); and the “Area Cost Factor Validation Study” (2021). He also authors MOCA’s quarterly construction economics newsletter, “Today’s Construction Economy”, currently in its 12th year. Tom received his BS in Economics from the US Air Force Academy in 1980 and his Masters in Cost Analysis from the USAF Institute of Technology in 1983. He is a retired USAF Reserve Colonel with 30 years of service and has extensive experience in cost and economics in the construction and weapon systems acquisition fields. Tom and his wife Karen have 4 grown children and live in Niceville, Florida.

For over ten years MOCA has gathered the most revealing economic behavior of the previous 3-month period and provided our insights in “Today’s Construction Economy”. MOCA’s quarterly newsletter highlights the features and trends that have an impact on Construction pricing, from materials costs and labor rates to national policy. It is often confusing and sometimes overwhelming to try to digest all of the conflicting messages in the construction economy and come away with any solid findings. This presentation simplifies the challenge by highlighting long-standing relationships between features of the economy and their impacts on construction selling prices, and sheds light on what we’re seeing today. No one can guarantee what lies ahead, but there are features of an economy that are known to precede certain conditions in the construction environment. It’s important to understand historical trends that consistently correlate with volume and selling price changes.
