A Tale of Two Modes in Santa Monica

The City of Santa Monica's Pedestrian Action Plan recognizes walking as a core part of the City’s identity and character, while laying out a specific vision, standards, priority projects, and programs to guide improvements to the walking environment over the next 15 years. The Pedestrian Action Plan continues the City’s longstanding effort to prioritize people walking in its planning and transportation decisions, promoting equity, and ensuring comfort for a wide range of users.

The Pedestrian Action Plan encourages the expanded use of innovative traffic signal and street operations strategies. In 2016, the City added pedestrian scrambles to 12 intersections in the Downtown area allowing pedestrian crossing in all directions at the same time, and allowing autos to cross through the intersection and turn without presence

In 1959, a very small group of Traffic Engineers in Orange County started meeting during their noon hour once each month. It had become quite evident that a dire need existed within the county for a forum within which all persons engaged in the Traffic Engineering function might periodically gather, discuss individual or mutual problems, and arrive at solutions which reflect the combined talents of the professionals and the public. The organizers were soon joined by representatives of other firms or agencies who sought to either lend their talents or become recipients of professional assistance. The ORANGE COUNTY TRAFFIC ENGINEERING COUNCIL did indeed become the desired forum.
