Many of the global risks today transcend national borders and require improved global cooperation. One such risk is the interrelated challenge of ocean degradation and climate change.
Peace Boat and the Global Challenges Foundation will hold a symposium onboard Peace Boat’s vessel in Stockholm, which will bring together young leaders from small island states, experts and activists to consider the dual crises of ocean degradation and climate change.
Young leaders, active in issues relating to the ocean and climate and representing states on the front line of climate change and marine degradation from the three regions of the Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the Caribbean, will board Peace Boat in Stockholm on June 26, 2018. They will travel to Copenhagen, Bergen, Reykjavik, Halifax and complete their journey in New York.
Based on the Pacific concept of Talanoa, or telling stories, the young leaders will engage with local people in the ports they visit to share the situation in their island homes and to hear local perspectives and solutions to these dual crises.
Organisers:
Peace Boat is a Japan-based NGO with consultative status with ECOSOC of the United Nations, and a campaigner for the Sustainable Development Goals, sailing with the Global Goals’ logo on the hull of the ship. Peace Boat was the first NGO to make a Voluntary Commitment to the implementation of SDG 14 from civil society. Peace Boat commits to building an Ecoship with a 40% reduction in CO2 with an aim to address ocean acidification. The ship has closed water and waste systems to combat marine pollution.
The Global Challenges Foundation was founded in 2012 by Swedish financial analyst and author Laszlo Szombatfalvy. The Foundation’s aim is to contribute to reducing the main global problems and risks that threaten humanity. To achieve this, the Global Challenges Foundation works in two ways: by increasing decision-makers’ and the public’s knowledge and insight about these challenges; and by stimulating discussion and innovative thinking about decision systems that would be able to manage the major global risks more effectively and equitably.
*Participants are requested to arrive early to clear port security procedures to enter the Ocean Dream. All participants must register by 12 noon on June 21. The ID used to register is required to pass through port and ship security.
