Obscura Society: Scurvy Awareness Day at Smuggler's Cove
Event Information
Description
Stave off the dreaded scurvy with the best grog in San Francisco
Join us in the Boathouse at Smuggler's Cove for Scurvy Awareness Day (it's a real thing!), enjoy some seriously amazing rum cocktails and learn a thing or two about rum, scurvy and the high seas. For the occasion, Smuggler's Cove's special scurvy-fighting grog will be just for $5 from 5-8pm.
Martin Cate, owner of Smuggler's Cove and expert on rum and exotic cocktails, will delve into his extensive booze-related archive of knowledge for a short history of grog and how it saved the Navy from the feared tooth loosening disease. Annetta Black, senior editor of Atlas Obscura, will fight her stage fright with grog in order to share stories of many attempts, successes and mis-steps in the attempt to solve the mystery of scurvy, and why the discovery of Vitamin C was totally worth the Nobel Prize.
Smuggler's Cove is dedicated to the history and variety of rum with over 300 rare rums to sample, and was named "Best Bar" by the SFist in September 2011. You can find out more about the opportunity and the challenge of sampling 200 rums as part of their Rumbustion Society here. They make really, really delicious cocktails.
