Obscura Society LA: Prey - The Private Studio of Taxidermist Allis Markham
Saturday, April 6, 2013 from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM (PDT)
Los Angeles, CA
Join Obscura Society LA as we learn that taxidermy goes beyond skin deep
Taxidermy is the ancient art of prepping, stuffing, and mounting the skins of deceased animals for display or study. No one is more of an expert of this centuries-old art than Allis Markham, an official taxidermist for the Los Angeles Museum of Natural History.
Allis is also the owner of Prey, an ethical and eco-friendly taxidermy service. Allis's art is centered around her love of nature and her belief that no part of the animal should go to waste. She began to hone her art at the Advanced Taxidermy Training Center in Montana and began her work at the Natural History Museum over a year ago.
Join Obscura Society LA and Field Agent Erin Johnson for an exclusive engagement held at Allis' Hollywood home and studio. Over the course of the evening, we will investigate a variety of topics focused on taxidermy theory and practice, beginning with a bird skinning demonstration. The Society will be invited to tour Allis’ studio, meet her pet chickens, and explore her one hundred year old home filled with strange and unique objects. Finally, we will end the evening with a glass of wine (or two) and a slideshow of behind the scenes photos from the Natural History Museum, including images of concealed specimens and lab oddities, such as the Victorian Aviary Domes, wax-infused primate faces, and a flying monkey.
