Obscura Day 2017: World In Transition – Exhibition Opening
Sat, May 6, 2017, 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM MDT
This Obscura Day, explore the concepts of indigenous and immigrant at the opening of World In Transition, an exhibition featuring Jane Ash Poitras and the late Michael Robinson.
Poitras' art is motivated by current social, political and cultural realities and the tumultuous realities of 2017. She says she is "particularly motivated to stress the vital positive impact of immigration in building the foundations of our society, its essential role in the ever-expanding circle of life that encompasses all of our people." Poitras' own personal background was born out of a mix of both indigenous and immigrant.
Robinson's images and poetry explore Canadian history, aboriginality, and spirituality, and have consistently expressed a profound concern and respect for the environment. Today, his work is treasured in public and private collections around the world. A number of the works on display were discovered in Robinson's home after his death in 2010 and have not been available for public viewing before.
