Event Details

At 420 feet in length, the Healy is the largest ship in the entire U.S. Coast Guard fleet.

As the newest and most technologically advanced polar icebreaker, Healy is designed to conduct a wide range of research activities, providing 4,200 square feet of scientific laboratory space, numerous electronic sensor systems, oceanographic winches, and accommodations for up to 50 scientists.

Guests on this tour will have an exceptionally rare opportunity to see the inner workings of an operational U.S. Coast Guard ship firsthand as we walk the ship from bow to stern, passing through various rooms, corridors, and onto the command bridge. We will also learn about Healy’s impressive ice-breaking abilities, significant contributions to the arctic science research community, and operational history in some of the coldest climates on earth, including logistics, search and rescue, ship escort, environmental protection, and enforcement of laws and treaties.

This tour is not for the faint of heart, as it will involve climbing multiple levels of stairs, moving through narrow corridors, and entering small and confined spaces.

  • Meet at the security guard gate of the USCG base at Pier 36 on South Massachusetts Street.
  • Please arrive promptly. Once the tour starts there will be no way to catch up!
  • Because this is a working federal installation all tour participants will be required to show either an enhanced Washington driver's license or valid United States issued passport to get on base. All other forms of identification will not be accepted.  No exceptions!
  • The tour will last approximately one and a half hours from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Limited parking will be available on base for those who present a valid enhanced driver's license and insurance. Because parking is limited, attendees are encouraged to use public transportation to arrive at the base.   Carpooling is encouraged for folks who decide to drive.
  • Tour is family-friendly but children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • This tour is best suited for individuals without mobility restrictions.
