Event description

Description

Get excited for the Ramadan event of the year! Ten cities and hundreds of athletes will embrace the spirit of the month by fasting, fundraising and building community for good through our annual 5K event. This year, Fasting5k is working with organizations providing resources for youth safety against violence.

The Bay Area event will take place at the Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California and go around Lake Merritt. The run will start an hour before Iftar (breaking of the fast) so that those fasting can eat soon after finishing the course. Feel free to hang out at the community center after! This year's fundraising beneficiary will be Youth ALIVE!'s Teens on Target program.

Youth ALIVE! is Oakland's anchor nonprofit for violence prevention, intervention and healing. Teens on Target is their violence prevention and youth leadership program which trains high school students to be peer educators, role models to their peers and vital active leaders in the public policy discussion. Each spring, they teach student-designed prevention workshops to hundreds middle school students, workshops that make them safer. All year round, they participate in hearings, rallies and public discussions with city leaders and the media to tell their stories and convey their own ideas for a safer neighborhood and a more peaceful city.

Youth ALIVE! has also developed the first ever hospital-based violence intervention program, Caught in the Crossfire, now a national model, which deploys intervention specialists to meet violently wounded youth at their hospital bedsides to offer alternatives to retaliation and intensive, trauma-informed case management. Additionally, their Pathways reentry program supports youth transitioning home from incarceration through case managers who work with youth to encourage attachment to school and to devise a path to safety and thriving. As if that wasn't enough, their Violence Interrupters work the streets of Oakland to mediate group, gang and individual conflicts, to defuse them before the guns come out, and prevent retaliatory violence by responding to the streets after shootings and homicides.

Their Crisis responders in the Khadafy Washington Project, take the hand of families of homicide victims, to guide them in the difficult aftermath of a killing, to reduce tensions and help them on a path from trauma to healing. Their mental health Counselors help young people and families served by all our programs to address trauma in the settings where they feel safest and most comfortable, in their homes and communities. Those that never engage with clinical mental health services are provided with their homegrown Screening and Tool for Awareness and Relief of Trauma or START. START is a brief intervention tool, developed with and for young men of color, which has been shown to significantly reduce trauma symptoms.

We couldn't be prouder to be partnering with such an important and effective organization. Don't miss your chance to do the same! Come meet some great people, have lots of fun and make change together! We look forward to seeing you there.

***Participants are strongly encouraged to raise a minimum of $250 to benefit our fundraising partners*** After registering, you will be provided a fundraising page unique to you to help get donations from friends and family.
