Transition: Early Adopters into Communities of LearningNZEALS

We welcome two speakers to share their CoL journey.

Shona Smith – Towards a Common Language

Shona Smith is Leader of Te Kahui Ako o Waitakere, a community of 12 West Auckland schools. She is Deputy Principal at Waitakere College, which recently won the Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, as well as being a finalist for Excellence in Leading. She is also a former National President of PPTA and a past NZQA Board member, with a history of involvement in assessment and qualifications reform. She was a founding member of Auckland Feminist Teachers, Campaign Against Violence in Education (CAVE) and was active at national and local level in the English teachers’ associations, NZATE and AATEL.

Ta Kahui Ako o Waitakere is coming towards the end of its first two years since the approval of the first Achievement Challenge. Shona will share the emerging implementation plan for the next three years, the growing sense of momentum as they develop common language and understandings around culturally responsive pedagogies, writing and mathematics and the planning for sustainability through the forthcoming change in leadership.

David White – Hits and Misses

David has been involved in teaching for 28 years and is in his 9th year as a principal. Apart from a four year stint in London, David’s experience has involved primary and intermediate schools in Auckland. He has always been interested in cross school collaboration and so the advent of Communities of Learning was an opportunity to explore this more and make a difference to our children.

The Lynfield Kahui Ako is coming to the end of its first two years as a Community of Learning. David will share his reflections on the last two years with an emphasis on what worked and what didn’t.

Drinks and finger food will be served from 6 pm onwards

To reserve a ticket through Evenbrite Members $10.00 and Non members $16.00
