Event description

Description

Welcome to New York State Energy Research and Development Authority's (NYSERDA) annual public deer hunting program at the Western New York Nuclear Service Center. This year, NYSERDA will open up approximately 1,500 acres of the Center beginning October 1, 2017 to hunters aged 12 and older with a valid New York State Department of Environmental Conservation hunting license. NYSERDA’s free program allows up to 50 hunters (10 hunters per five designated areas) to hunt each day of archery through November 17, 2017. Scouting will also be available from September 16 -24, 2017 (sign up at NYSERDA 2017 Scouting Program in EventBrite).

Preapproval for the archery program is required. You must complete NYSERDA's 2017 archery hunting application online (visit the deer hunting page on NYSERDA's website at: (https://www.nyserda.ny.gov/Researchers-and-Policymakers/West-Valley/Deer-Hunting-Program). Upon completion of the online application, hunters must print out the certificate of completion and keep it on their dashboard throughout the season.

Upon selection of your day(s) and area(s), you will automatically by registered for those days/areas unless the 10 hunters per area per day limit has been reached. For accountability purposes, during each day or scouting and archery, participating hunters must call the NYSERDA Deer Hunting Information line at 716-942-9960 ext. 4990 upon leaving the woods, but no later than one hour after sunset, and if they choose not to hunt any day that they are registered for.

Crossbows are allowed the last two weeks of archery season (November 4-17, 2017) for crossbow-certified hunters aga 14 or older.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

While hunting, display your NYSERDA completion certificate on the dashboard of your parked vehicle, and park and hunt in your designated location. Please be sure to park far enough off the road for snowplows to get through.

What can I bring into the event?

Consumption of intoxicants (e.g., alcohol, marijuana) before or during hunting is prohibited. Anyone discovered under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be permanently removed from the program.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

Each hunter must register individually for each day and area.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Hunters are to park and hunt in the area for which they have been assigned. If your parked vehicle is found at the entry point after one hour past sunset, the Cattaraugus County Sheriff will notify the NYSERDA Project Manager, who will initiate emergency response actions.
