About Us
MakerSpace NYC is a non-profit, community based organization dedicated to building economic growth and supporting innovation in our community. Our education programs open new doors to learning, creative problem solving, and invention through the sciences, new technology, and vocational skills for all ages. Our goal is to promote creativity and collaboration across disciplines and to make technology accessible to anyone who desires to make or invent something, regardless of skills or experience.
Since 2013, Makerspace NYC has operated Staten Island MakerSpace on the north shore of Staten Island. We have helped thousands of creative entrepreneurs get their start, created a sculpture park, provided STEM and arts education to students all across the city, and become a cultural anchor in Staten Island.
In 2019, with the help of the New York City Economic Development Corporation, Makerspace NYC expanded into Brooklyn to become the operators of the Futureworks Makerspace at Brooklyn Army Terminal.
Futureworks Makerspace is a 20,000 sq ft facility that houses industrial and advanced manufacturing equipment including a metalshop, woodshop, machine shop, industrial sewing and textile shop, laser cutting, waterjet cutting, CNC technology, and 3D printing equipment. All of the equipment in the shop is available to the public to use via monthly memberships.
Like our Staten Island location, we offer classes and workshops to the public in a wide variety of areas including training on the equipment, welding, woodworking, 3D printing, laser cutting, sewing, electronics, and much more.
Makerspace NYC also offers family programs and K-12 education programs that focus on science, technology, engineering, arts, and math in fun, project-based learning activities.
Futureworks NYC is a key component of New York City’s Industrial Action Plan to help emerging and existing manufacturers adopt advanced technologies and increase local production. New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) created Futureworks NYC, an $8 million investment that will create over 2,000 good-paying jobs and provide key support services for businesses to start, grow, and thrive across the five boroughs through a network of shops, resources, and programs that support small manufacturing.
About the NYCxDesign Festival
New York City's official celebration of design will return with NYCxDESIGN’s 10th Anniversary Festival. Formed as a City-led initiative in 2013, each year the Festival offers a global stage for New York's designers, manufacturers, artists, and makers to bring world-class design to the forefront. Through city-wide and virtual events and programming centered around design exhibitions, key trade shows and fairs held annually in May, the Festival has evolved into an internationally renowned event that unifies New York’s creative capital under one umbrella. In 2019 the Festival featured over 400 events, attracted 300k+ national and international attendees, and generated $111 million spent by visitors, drawing significant exposure and opportunities for the City’s design disciplines, people, events, and related industries. In honor of its tenth anniversary milestone, NYCxDESIGN will introduce dynamic new programming and interactive experiences to the Festival that invite the public and global design community to discover the best of NYC in person and virtually through open studio tours, workshops, public installations, talks, tours, and more.
