Description

This NYCFEC Elective is designed for anyone, who has ownership in a family business and is now, or may at some future point be, raising children in the context of family business and financial success, and wants to develop healthy and productive potential stewards. Relevant for anyone planning for kids in their future (the earlier, the better) through and including kids in middle school (up to about age 14).

This NYCFEC Elective will provide a basic understanding of child development with best practices from the growing field of family business so you can help your children develop passion, motivation, deeply held values and strong character. You will be able to start setting a foundation for realistic expectations and possible future involvement with the family business and/or other assets - all with an eye towards avoiding common family business pitfalls and harnessing the potential of the family’s legacy. Session includes practical information on career and home life, common missteps parents make, essential character foundation elements, instilling values, inspiring your kids about the family business, material possessions, money styles, stewardship, ways to engage in conversations, and much more.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

Family members from famly businesses:

  • Whose Family Business is based in the NYC area, or
  • Whose Family Business is based elsewhere, but live in the NYC area

Family business trustees responsible for overseeing the care of minors through a trust structure may also find the session relevant.

FACULTY:

Jeff Savlov is the Founder of Blum & Savlov, LLP and consultant to family owned businesses, families who share significant assets and the advisors who serve them. He brings more than 25 years of unique experience in sales and marketing, business ownership, entrepreneurial endeavors and family dynamics training, along with a common sense style, to his consulting work with families. By integrating his diverse business background, extensive academic work and family dynamics/psychological training with his experience working in his family’s commercial printing business, he helps enterprising families to balance family and business so both will thrive for many generations.

Having participated in his family’s business, he understands first hand the challenges of balancing the interplay between family and business and the devastation that can befall an otherwise healthy business when this balance is not proactively managed. In the business his family owned, a consultant was brought in to work with the family, facilitated a successful reorganization of the business and helped rebuild family relationships. This is one of the primary experiences which motivated his career in family business/family wealth consulting.

Mr. Savlov holds a Master of Social Work degree from Rutgers University with specializations in group dynamics and family systems theory and has a post-graduate certification from the Institute for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy of New Jersey (now the Center for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy of NJ) where he is a member of the faculty. In addition, he has consulted with Fortune 500 companies such as Bristol-Myers Squibb, Johnson & Johnson and Schering Plough.

Seating is limited and advance registration is required.
