This NYCFEC AM Series ℠ session will be interactive and will explore the various ways in which families make decisions: As a family and as owners of family businesses. Barbara Hauser will share insights from families in several parts of the world and from different cultures. The common premise is “who” has the authority to make “what” decisions. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development principles of corporate governance promote “transparency” and “accountability”—for family businesses Barbara adds “participation.” The discussion will cover methods of decision-making that seem more effective and will touch on Family Councils and Family Constitutions.

NYCFEC sessions are small, confidential and private, so you can feel safe about raising or discussing any of your challenges or questions through the sessions. You do not have to disclose your full name or identify your family business during the session. No solicitation is permitted.

*Space is very limited, so please sign up early to save your spot. All attendees must be registered.

FACULTY

Barbara Hauser, JD

Barbara R. Hauser is the author of the book International Family Governance and is an internationally renowned expert on international family governance having worked with family enterprises in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. She has a deep appreciation for and understanding of different approaches to creating family governance systems in different cultures, as well as assisting families with developing family constitutions. She is process-oriented, and instead of following the control wishes of a patriarch, she now advises the whole family as a group, with a focus on developing strong family governance. Ms. Hauser is a well-known speaker around the world and is widely published on a wide variety of topics related to families and their enterprises. Her treatise on International Estate Planning is updated each year. She is a graduate of Wellesley and Penn Law, with a U.S. Supreme Court clerkship. She first worked as a lawyer with family enterprises, largely focused on the transition to the second generation, using a number of trusts and shareholder agreements. When she was recruited to be a full-time advisor to a billionaire with more than 130 companies, she spent four years learning how much more can be involved than legal work.

Seating is limited and advance registration is required.
