About this event

The NYC Department of Education (DOE) Office of Sustainability are hosting the NYC Solar Schools Education Program again for the 2022-2023 school year!

The format for the program is hybrid. The first session will be virtual, the second will be in-person at Solar One's office in Long Island City, Queens. Solar One's address: 9-03 44th Rd, Queens, NY 11101

Please read through the cohort options at the bottom.

NYC DOE teachers are invited to attend this professional learning opportunity. All participating teachers will be provided with the training, curriculum, and resources they need to integrate solar and energy conservation content and activities into their coursework. Workshops will offer a total of 10 hours of CTLE professional learning credits, spread over 2 sessions. This program is FREE for interested teachers; all costs are covered by the DOE through funding from the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS). Teachers will receive their materials toolkit during Session 2 of the training.

This year, to accommodate teachers who may not have school permission to leave the classroom during teaching hours, we are holding the workshops on Saturdays. There will be separate cohorts for different grade levels: elementary, middle and high school. This PD series is not geared towards K-2nd grade teachers, they are welcome to attend if interested, but lesson plans and content will be focused on grade 3 and older students. Teachers can select the cohort they would prefer to participate in, regardless of the grades they teach, but please be mindful that the content and level of information will be formatted for the respective grades. Please read through the cohort options at the bottom.

About Solar One and the NYC Solar Schools Education Program

The NYC DOE is working with DCAS on a mayoral initiative to install 100 MW of solar on City-owned buildings by 2025.  A key goal of the NYC Solar Schools Education Program is to connect the solar installations on school buildings to curriculum, allowing teachers to use solar as a tool for students to learn about renewable energy and sustainability, and as a catalyst for STEM learning.

Solar One’s K-12 curriculum, GDL, is a STEM-focused, interdisciplinary sustainability curriculum that provides students with hands-on experiential learning. The NYC Solar Schools Education Program includes a combination of hands-on and remote learning activities that give context for why solar is important – such as an introduction to power plants, fossil fuels, and climate change – and explore the science and applications of solar energy. The remote learning activities feature interactive web resources that students and teachers can use to explore solar and energy conservation in their local communities.

FAQs

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Email education@solar1.org

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the in person event?

No, just a valid ID

What happens if the COVID-19 situation does not allow for in-person workshops?

If the NYC DOE makes changes that does not allow for us to hold this workshop in person, we will contact all participants who have registered for the in-person workshops and switch the workshops over to a virtual platform. The dates of the program will remain the same.

Please select a cohort from the list below. Workshops take place over 2 Saturdays (virtual or in person)

We recommend sticking with one cohort, if possible, to maximize the benefits of a professional learning community. If you need to switch any of the sessions, you will need to reach out to karen@solar1.org for approval.
