Event description

Description

Winter is coming. But each year as the season of darkness nears, we gather to celebrate reason and the light humanity has made.

This year, we’ll discuss how people have passed down their culture and knowledge from generation to generation, and how long-lasting values might be formed and preserved.

Content notes:
- Mild social pressure to sing.
- Unflinching discussion of life and death. (It'll get sad!)
- At least one sappy song about love and community.
- Secular Solstice welcomes children, but not all parents will feel that their children are ready for the content.

5:00 PM - Opening reception. You'll be given a light, led through the darkness into a festive hall of people gathered from all over the east coast.

6:00 PM - Ceremony begins. Two hours of guest speakers and singalong songs, telling the story of human history.

7:00 PM - Young children and people who aren't in the mood to deal with sad things return to the social hall for more fun and merriment. People interested in singing in the darkness together, confronting potentially challenging aspects of the world, are welcome to remain in the auditorium for the second half of the ceremony.

8:00 PM - Everyone returns to the social hall for the afterparty.

10:00 PM - Closing

Guest Performers and Storytellers:

Adrianna Mateo
Adrianna has been hailed as a “rising artist” by The New York Times. Time Out New York praised her solo debut at the Bang On A Can Marathon as being “triumphant.” Adrianna’s live appearance highlights include The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, performing at Carnegie Hall, simultaneous performances on stage at the Met Museum and the Met Opera (in an acting role), and many international tours, including dates in Europe, South Africa, and Southeast Asia.

Eden Atencio
A former America Swing Dance champion, aerialist, jazz singer, producer and all around showgirl, she adds jazzy flair to any event. She sings regularly with the band "$1.25 Quartet", and current hosts a fabulous cabaret show on the first Tuesday of the month at Sid Gold's Request room.
