Morrisania Musical Legacy
The tour will start at the Bronx Music Heritage Center and walk through neighborhood where legends in jazz, hip hop, doo wop and Latin music lived and played from the 1940s through today. The tour begins in Morrisania, where there was once a thriving jazz scene and where some of the pioneers of hip hop got their start. These neighborhoods were also some of the hardest hit by the fires in the 1970s and 1980s. The tour will walk by Charlotte Street, one of the Bronx's most famous streets which became a national symbol of urban decay. The fires and problems of those years also affected the music scene. There will also be discussion and recognition of the community organizations that helped turn the Bronx around and the street and public art that continue to make the neighborhoods vibrant. Meet at the Bronx Music Heritage Center, 1303 Louis Nine Blvd., right off the 2/5 train at Freeman St.
This tour is provided for free by the NYC Mayor's Office of Media & Entertainment
