Event description

Description

Northwest Kidney Kids is hosting it's first ever Winter Youth Retreat. This event is for youth in Oregon and SW Washington with end-stage renal failure (on dialysis or had a kidney transplant) that are currently in high school. The retreat will be in Otis, OR at a camp called Westwind.

About NW Kidney Kids Camps Program: NW Kidney Kids Winter & Summer Youth and Weekend Family Camps, are no-cost camps for children with chronic kidney disease (either on dialysis or with a transplant) and their family members. The Kidney Camp experience provides a safe environment for children, teens, and families to gather for educational activities, parent enrichment, emotional support, camaraderie, and networking. Camp participants are provided with valuable information that assists them in managing the challenges associated with kidney disease. They receive support from professionals who understand these challenges, and children, teens, and parents offer meaningful support to one another and develop friendships that extend beyond Camp. Kidney Kids Camp encourages campers to see life beyond their disease while addressing the emotional issues associated with kidney disease and empowering Kidney Kids to achieve lifelong success.

Youth Camp: Starting in 2019, Youth will be able to attend two Camps – Winter and Summer. Winter Youth Camp will be three days/two nights in Otis, OR and Summer Youth Camp will continue to be held in conjunction with Family Camp in Turner, OR with the first five days of summer camp are exclusively reserved for middle school and high school youth. At the Winter and Summer Camps, Youth gets time to spend away from their families to focus on building independence, self-esteem, and self-reliance. Educators, renal nurses, physicians, social workers and adult living successfully with chronic kidney disease provide them with sessions on health-related self-management skills including the importance of maintaining a strict medication compliance, nutrition, and physical wellness. An important part of the interaction comes from counselors who are also kidney mentors, sharing personal life examples of powerful testimony with these youth about struggle and triumph in their life with kidney disease. The training and inspiration they receive at Kidney Camp help to ensure that they keep their transplants for a longer period of time.

FAQs

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

When you registered you will have three options. 1) Drive yourself 2) Meet us at Beaver Pond Access Road or 3) Van Transporation.

We will be renting a 12 person transportation van and stopping at a designated point in Vancouver, Tualitan, and Salem en route to the camp. We will be meeting at the Beaver Pond Access road at the camp around three to start heading into the camp. Times and specific locations in each of these areas will be determined as the event grows nearer. Intern Nicholas LaHusen will reach out to attendees via email to inform them of these changes.

My child has a lot of medical needs, how will they be addressed at Camp?

We will have a dedicated nurse for this event. Given the short format of this weekend and the various ways youth may arrive at Camp, we will be REQUIRING all forms to be returned prior to camp and a phone call with our nurse ahead of time.
