Event Details

Where is the Spirit at work in this world? A world where people living under occupation are blamed for their own suffering…where black men and women are murdered by police…where many who claim to love Jesus respond to refuge children with threats of violence…where trans folks are attacked for using the ‘wrong’ bathrooms…where children in oil-rich lands look up to the sky in terror…where workers around the world can’t feed their families…and where thousands live on the streets in the richest nation on earth?

Jesus’ life and message confront the oppressions that surround us, but modern expressions of Christianiaty routinely fail to embrace the subversive message of Jesus. How can our churches and communities center around the radical Spirit of Jesus?

If you want to go deeper into a life of faithful resistance to the Empire, consider joining us for “Nurturing Prophetic Imagination”– a three day retreat to help participants break free from the dominant scripts of our imperial culture and begin to find a more faithful, life-giving way of following the way of Jesus in the midst of empire.

GOALS

We offer Nurturing Prophetic Imagination retreats to teach participants a way of understanding the message of Jesus that helps them break free from the dominant scripts of our society and pursue a different way of life, so that they can thrive as compassionate human beings.

We want to do more than challenge conceptual knowledge, but also equip participants in how they might more practically follow the way of Jesus in the midst of imperial culture. These retreats bring together deeper political analysis with the practice of Christian contemplation so that we might prophetically challenge the ways that our society fosters alienation and death while finding a path to healing and life.

The retreat works through five phases. After an introductory session we explore five themes from the life of Jesus:

  1.  The Way of Wilderness: How have we been alienated from God, from Creation, and from each other?
  2.  The Way of Solidarity: How do we begin to experience the presence of Jesus among the oppressed?
  3.  The Way of Transfiguration: To transform the world, we must first transform our way of seeing the world.
  4.  The Way of Resistance: How can we, empowered by the Spirit, disrupt the flow of oppression and help wake people to the holy alternatives?
  5.  The Way through Death to Resurrection: What within us needs to pass away? And what is the new thing God is stirring with each of us?

These are the five themes we explore in much greater detail in our Prophetic Immersion program.
