Presentation Title: Numbing & Triggers: How Coping Strategies For Military & First Responders Can Negatively Impact Their Life
Description of the Presentation: Do you find that the better you get at your job, the worse you get at life? Are you experiencing some "numbing"? Maybe things you used to like, you've recently lost interest? If any of these concepts sound familiar, then this webinar is for you!
Josh Goodwin, a retired counterespionage case officer and special agent, will discuss numbing and triggers during the webinar. He will talk about how they keep us safe at work but negatively impact our personal lives. Josh will talk about what they are, how to recognize them, and provide some tips to overcome them to help you continue to be great in your job but also happy in your personal life. He also shares a few war stories along the way.
Don't Miss it!
Target Audience:This Public Presentation is open to anyone with an interest in the subject matter. This webinar is particularly aimed for all 1st Responders and their families, Police, Fire, EMS, Dispatchers, Military/Veterans, Corrections, Coroners, Chaplains, Retired 1st Responders, Professional Staff, Clinicians and Health Professionals and those who work in helping professions who work with others.
About the Speaker: In 2004, Josh was injured during a mortar blast while serving in Iraq. Despite suffering from the effects of traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress, he would return time and time again serving over 1,000 days at war, hunting spies and terrorists across the globe as a Special Agent for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. At that time, mental health stigma in the law enforcement and military communities made it near impossible for Josh to speak about his ongoing struggle to his coworkers and leaders for fear of losing his career. Instead, he decided to suffer in silence.
In 2008, Josh met Cheri. Despite being a trained and experienced mental health counselor, Cheri felt helpless watching Josh struggle with the effects of war and vicarious trauma. To become better equipped, she began researching post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, and vicarious trauma treatment theory and methodology. Over time, while suffering at the hands of leaders ill-equipped to deal with the complexities of Josh’s trauma, he began losing the ability to keep the adverse side effects of his trauma exposure at bay. After a series of failed coping attempts, he entered an intensive outpatient treatment program changing his and Cheri’s life forever.
Now, Josh and Cheri are making mental health their next mission. They have leveraged their training, experience, and education to build a company equipped to help heroes and their families successfully navigate the stress and trauma that comes from being in the military and first responder communities. Not only do they spend their time providing world-class care to heroes, but they also routinely speak publicly about their experience to help fight the stigma in these communities. Also, they actively participate in non-profit organizations around Colorado designed to support and heal the heroes of our nation.
