Event description

Description

The day will bring out the key themes of the Nuclear Sector Deal: enhanced skills leadership, staying at the cutting edge, exciting the next generation about nuclear, sector transferability, and local apprenticeships – while driving for much greater diversity across our sector.

The conference will enable sharing of good practice through a number of practical, interactive workshops.

On the evening of the conference, the annual Nuclear Skills Awards Dinner will be held at the Hilton Manchester, this event will recognise the significant achievements of promising talent in our sector. Please note this is a separate event.

Nuclear Skills 2019 Conference is a free to attend event open to the whole industry and beyond.

About the day

Delegates will hear from NSSG member companies and other experts, on what the industry is doing to ensure it is equipped to tackle all aspects of the skills challenge. It will demonstrate how national leadership is being applied to a UK strategic sector of national importance in relation to energy (current operations and new build) and defence as well as the decommissioning portfolio.

In order to address the skills challenge the key Conference Workshop themes have been selected represent the opportunities, challenges and agility required to face up to the skills issues identified. These themes are directly aligned with the Nuclear Sector Deal.

  • Exciting the Next Generation: Diversity & Attraction

  • Staying at the Cutting Edge: Growing our Subject Matter Experts

  • Local Apprenticeships: Building our Talent Pipeline

  • Facilitating Knowledge Transfer: Sector Transferability

Join us for the Nuclear Skills 2019 Fringe Event: Navigating Your Career Journey

This YGN fringe event will be supported by YGN volunteers from the industry telling their story, talking about their career journey and offering tips and guidance, aimed at younger delegates (although all delegates are invited to attend!), followed by round table discussions with the attendees, in small groups.

These informal groups will allow delegates to chat with current employees about anything from “What does a nuclear mechanical engineer do?” to “should I put the fact I was a cub scout or ran a school football team on my CV?” and everything in between.

The speakers will talk about, for example:

  • Did you have an interest in the subject when young?

  • What did you study?

  • Did you gain any work experience before getting into the sector

  • How did you get into the industry ?

  • Did you face any early challenges?

  • What attracted you to your company?

  • How has your career progressed?

  • How do you feel you are making a difference?

  • What are your tips and guidance for getting into the Sector?

  • What’s your proudest moment in work

  • Would you have made any different choices?
