About this event
Our beloved koala populations are vanishing.
The 2019 NSW Parliamentary Inquiry made it crystal clear - we are witnessing an extinction event which, without decisive action, will see koalas gone by 2050.
This Coffs Harbour Koala Conference is a meeting of concerned citizens, conservation groups and scientists to appeal to all political parties to take the dramatic corrective action needed to save NSW koalas.
The March 2023 NSW election is just months away. We know the state government has regulatory power over forests, land use and development. The next Government’s policies will decide the fate of koala habitat in NSW.
The full day conference will focus on loss of koala habitat, with presentations covering science and policy, as well as the experiences of local communities. We will learn about the inadequacies of the current NSW Government policy and what is needed to turn around the loss of koala habitat.
See full program outline below.
Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea provided. Evening drinks will be held after the conference.
Conference dinner hosted by North Coast Environment Council
Participants are also warmly invited to a dinner on the evening of the conference, hosted by the North Coast Environment Council. Please select the dinner add-on option with your ticket.
We are very fortunate to have Bob Debus AM joining us as the guest speaker at the conference dinner. Bob Debus was a member of the NSW Parliament from 1981 to 1988 and from 1995 to 2007, as well as serving in the Commonwealth Parliament. He was NSW's longest serving Environment Minister and oversaw the expansion of the national park system of New South Wales by over one-third. Bob is now the Chair of the Great Eastern Rangers Initiative and Wilderness Australia.
The Koala Conference is being coordinated by Catherine Cusack (Member of the NSW Legislative Council 2003-2022) and organised collaboratively with NSW environmental NGOs, including the NSW Nature Conservation Council, NSW National Parks Association, WWF, North Coast Environment Council and North East Forest Alliance.
If you can’t make it to the conference in person in Coffs Harbour, but would like to watch online, register your interest here
On the Sunday after the conference, NPA is hosting a Koala Family Picnic from 12-3pm at the North Coast Regional Botanical Garden - all welcome!
