Event description
DAY 3: NSSI training shares the various aspects of self-injury as well as evidence informed practices for intervention and prevention.

About this event

Non-suicidal self injury is intentionally hurting the body, but without suicidal intent. Because it often looks like a suicidal gesture, it tends to evoke fear and confusion. Its very nature seems to defy deep instinctual human drives for self-preservation as well as invoke strong social taboos related to self-inflicted injury. It is, after all, quite puzzling. Why does someone choose to cut or otherwise hurt himself? Why would she do this in a way that looks like a suicide attempt, but then insists that it actually has nothing to do with suicide. Learn how to understand and effectively respond to these behaviors.

Janis Whitlock is a Research Scientist and the Associate Director for Teaching and Training in the Bronfenbrenner Center for Translational Research. She is the Director of the Cornell Research Program on Self-Injury and Recovery and has authored of publications on non-suicidal self-injury in adolescence and young adulthood, social media and mental health, and in youth connectedness to schools and communities. She earned a doctorate in Developmental Psychology from Cornell University (2003), a Masters of Public Health from UNC Chapel Hill (1994), and a BA from the University of California at Berkeley (1988).
