NPCJI Cybersecurity Class: Protect Yourself and Your Sources

In late 2012 a source contacted Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald under a pseudonym claiming he had "sensitive documents" for the national security reporter but needed to communicate with him confidentially. That source was Edward Snowden. Today, the methods Greenwald, Laura Poitras and Edward Snowden used to uncover the NSA's broad information collection operation is a must for any journalist who needs to secure their communications.

We live in a highly dynamic environment where journalists need to protect their sources and themselves using encrypted emails and secure forms of digital communication. The inability to take advantage of such tools could mean missing the story or worse; putting sources in danger.

Come learn about the basics of cybersecurity best practices, how to encrypt emails and digital files, and more.

The National Press Club Journalism Institute and Press Freedom Committee are hosting a day-long bootcamp on Saturday, April 29, from 9am to 1:45pm in the Club’s Zenger room. Registration is required; tickets are $30 for NPC members and $45 for the general public. Lunch will be provided.

The instructors will be Aaron Rinehart and David Reese from Testbed Inc., and Ferdous Al-Faruque, NPC Treasurer.

The class is aimed at individuals who want to learn how to protect their digital information in an age where governments, criminal entities and other parties are becoming more sophisticated in their efforts to ease-drop and play interference between journalists and their sources.

The NPC Journalism Institute, the club's nonprofit affiliate, conducts press freedom events and offers practical training for communications professionals centered on high standards, ethical conduct and best practices.
