Event description

Description

Join the Asian American Arts Alliance for our November Town Hall, highlighting artists and groups working in comedy! Learn about the diverse and exciting creative projects and opportunities coming out of the Asian American community during Town Hall's rapid-fire line-up of 60-second pitches.

Our featured presenters this month are two fantastic all-Asian sketch comedy groups, Model Majority and Overstep Comedy, who will each perform live comedy sketches and share more about their work.

Sign up to pitch and perform a 60-second comedy bit, share an upcoming project, promote an event, ask for help, find collaborators and venues for your work, inform others about an opportunity or residency, or simply introduce yourselves and your work to the community. Bring something to share for our post-pitch potluck!

You don't have to pitch to attend—RSVP to enjoy the potluck, presentations, and the company of fellow artists and organizers!

6:30 PM: Doors open
7:00 PM: Pitches & Presentations
8:00 PM: Potluck

Town Hall is the Alliance's bi-monthly community gathering event that features performances, pitches, and a potluck! We welcome arts organizations and artists of all disciplines (musicians, actors, filmmakers, poets, visual artists)—anyone with a creative fire and joy for the arts—to pitch upcoming projects, find collaborators, or discover new opportunities in a lively space. The catch? You have 60 seconds to deliver your pitch!

RSVP required to pitch; RSVP encouraged to attend.

This event is free and open to the public.

Model Majority’s debut on November 19, 2018 at The Tank played to a sold out theatre and they have been packing houses in venues around NYC ever since. Their sketches are written by, directed by, and star a rotating cast of some of the funniest and most talented Asian-Americans in New York; exploring comedic themes rarely seen in mainstream media but widely understood. Model Majority promises to bring a fresh new perspective to the New York comedy scene. They've been featured in Time Out, South China Morning Post, Cityguide, and other press outlets. Team members have appeared in TV and film including SNL, Comedy Central, Tracy Morgan's The Last OG, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, Blue Bloods, Step Up 3, Blacklist, Ray Donovan, Law & Order: SVU; Broadway shows, UCB and top comedy clubs.

Overstep Comedy is a sketch comedy collective made up of writers, performers, and creators. It was founded in February 2019 and its mission is to be an inclusive and welcoming place for comedians of color. Overstep Comedy explores marginalization and what it means to not only re-center our experiences but also change our social paradigms through comedy. They see laughter as not an escape but also an entry point into difficult conversations. They also make a lot of food references - they're hungry! Since their successful debut at the People’s Improv Theater (the PIT) in New York, they’ve self-produced three original digital comedy shorts and were offered a 6-month run that extends until the end of 2019. Out of over 300 applicants they were accepted into the 2019 Diverse as F*ck Comedy Festival in New York. Their digital shorts were recently screened at Asian American Film Thing, a showcase series of Asian American short films hosted by Angel Yau.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council; the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature; CJ Huang Foundation, Capital One; Con Edison; and numerous individual donors.
