About Tonja:

A native of Indianapolis, Indiana, Tonja is proud to be a 25+ year veteran of nonprofit management and leadership.  Tonja serves as the CEO of the Social Health Association of Indiana, Inc. (SHA).  She is delighted to lead the oldest and largest youth health and peer violence prevention education provider in Indiana serving more than 45,000 youth and 5,000 adults annually.  Quality evidence-based programs are provided for K-12 grade students by SHA’s professional staff in urban, suburban and rural communities throughout Indiana.

As CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana from 2006-2011, Tonja created an award-winning agency with recognitions such as “Gold Standard Agency” status by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America for quality service and growth; voted in 2011 by NUVO readers as the #1 Place to Volunteer in central Indiana; and, a 2011 recipient of an Indiana Achievement Award as one of four most exemplary nonprofits in the state of Indiana. Charity Navigator awarded a four-star rating to the agency.   In 2009, Tonja was honored with the national “Robert Ski Walsh Memorial Award” by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America for being a mentor and role-model for her staff and others.  Prior to joining Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana, Tonja was President & CEO of Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis, an organization that inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.  Tonja’s leadership enabled Girls Inc. to grow from serving 600 girls at two centers to over 5,000 girls through centers and outreach!  Her agency was recognized as a model agency by the national Girls Inc. network and in 2004 received five national awards for Excellence in Service, Growth and Innovation.

In 2006, Tonja was honored as a Forty Under 40 leader by the Indianapolis Business Journal, as being one of the top 40 leaders in central Indiana under the age of 40.  As an alumna of Indiana University Purdue University of Indianapolis (IUPUI), Tonja has received several honors including the Distinguished Liberal Arts Alumni Service Award; the Irwin Experience Excellence Award for service beyond the call of duty; the Maynard K. Hine Medal as the highest alumni honor; and, the Spirit of Philanthropy Award.

Tonja earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and her Master of Public Affairs degree in nonprofit management from Indiana University and the Center on Philanthropy.  She is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE). Upon receiving her Bachelor’s degree in 1990, Tonja was employed by IUPUI to develop a program to increase student retention and academic success.  Tonja founded the IUPUI Student Mentor Program.  Currently the Student Mentor program employs hundreds of students who mentor their peers to academic success.   Annually the “Tonja Eagan Faculty Service Award” is granted in her honor to an outstanding faculty mentor. From 1996-2001, Tonja served as the National Vice President of Program Services for the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (formerly American Humanics)  in Kansas City, Missouri. She provided program services and oversight to 85 college campus programs nationally and internationally to prepare and certify undergraduate students for careers in the nonprofit sector.

As a volunteer, Tonja currently serves as Past Board President, Caregivers Connections; Past Board President, IU Lilly School of Philanthropy Alumni Association; Dean’s Advisory Council, IUPUI School of Liberal Arts; Mentor, Mentoring Women’s Network; and, a long-time Big Sister to a teenage girl named Brenai.
