Event description

Description

Join us again with the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority volunteers and staff on Saturday November 16th at Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve to install some split rail fence at the start of the Kestrel Trail. The Kestrel Trail starts at the parking lot and sees high visitor traffic. We hope to install the split rail fence to help protect the sensitive habitat of the hillside. The work site is just a few minutes from the parking lot and exhibits a panoramic view of the Santa Clara Valley and the San Francisco Bay.

We will be meeting volunteers at the parking lot at Sierra Vista at 10:00 a.m. to sign waivers, get protective equipment and water, as well as tools. At 10:15 a.m. we walk down the hill to the work site. In the spirit of providing a fulfilling experience, we will also have one of our staff present some exciting information on the fall ecology of this expansive property during our lunch break (12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m.). We hope to end the project at around 3:00 p.m.

The Open Space Authority provides all the necessary tools, safety equipment, and training for the day, as well as water, coffee, snacks, and lunch. To reduce plastic waste, we ask that you bring your own water bottle and coffee mug to refill at our hydration and coffee stations. We also have extra reusable water bottles to ensure participants stay hydrated. Please let me know your sandwich preferences (vegetarian or non-vegetarian). We will be ordering from Subway or Safeway.

The dress code for safety and comfort is sturdy close-toed shoes, longs pants (no shorts, sweats, or tights), and breathable shirts that cover at least shoulders. A hat and sunscreen is also must. Expect some steep terrain going downhill to the work site. There is also the potential for ticks and snakes in the area. The work site is fully exposed to the sun so a hat and protective clothing are a must!
