About this Event

Caregivers - How to Catch a Break- Ever feel drained after caring for others? We will discuss key Survival strategies to keep you from losing your sanity as well as your own wellness as a Caregiver. Let's talks about how to develop and maintain a win-win situation with the loved one you are caring for!

Deeply Rooted in North Carolina- ASBC member and author Dr. Juanita Patience Moss talks about her book based on her research using DNA tests and historical records to solve a 154-year-old family mystery. Dr. Moss discovered descendants of her great grandfather and his brother who were both enslaved men who escaped slavery to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War.

From Ancestry to Curing Sickle Cell Disease- Understanding Personal Genetics As the cost of sequencing a person's entire genome has decreased, a new era of medicine has emerged called Precision Medicine, where the treatments and medical decisions will be increasingly based on a patient's genetics for better health outcomes. In order for Precision Medicine to help all patients, an understanding of the genetics from many populations is necessary. This class will give a bird's-eye view of the recent advances in genetic research, provide a basic understanding of genetics and ancestry, and discuss the importance of diversity in genetic studies and the ethical considerations of new technology such as gene editing.

HIV, Stigma & The Black Church- HIV-related stigma refers to the negative attitude experienced by individuals who are HIV-positive. Despite the tremendous advancements seen in combating the disease, those that contract the virus are stigmatized based on sexual orientation, age, race, socioeconomic status, gender and other variables. It is fear, embarrassment, public perception and condemnation which serve as major barriers to getting tested, seeking treatment, and advocating prevention. Join the discussion with our well-informed panel as we strive to eradicate HIV-related stigma.

Know Your Rights, Part II: What Happens If I Am Arrested?- No one plans to be arrested, but it can happen to you, even if you did nothing at all. What happens next? Join the Jail and Prison, Legal Resources, and Social Justice Ministries for a highly informative discussion on how to conduct yourself from the moment you are placed under arrest until the day you potentially face a jury for a verdict. Post-conviction rights will also be addressed, as well as how to lead a successful life after a criminal conviction. Our distinguished panel includes former professional football player, turned criminal defendant, turned federal public defender, James King, Esq., legendary federal trial Judge Reggie B. Walton, and renowned defense attorneys Preston Pugh, Esq. and Kira West, Esq. This event promises to be informative and engaging. You do not want to miss it! Register online today!
