  • Dr. Maureen Allen, Emergency Medicine and Palliative Care Physician, Antigonish, NS

  • The concept of total pain was introduced by Cecily Saunders: physical, social, psychological and spiritual suffering. Existential suffering can be thought of as distress within the three main spheres of total pain: Spiritual factors (belief in afterlife for example); psychological factors (sense of self for example) and social factors (connectedness to others for example). These three sources of pain are not to be thought of as separate identities because they are all interconnected. Therefore, these three spheres cannot be treated in isolation but must be treated in unity to affect a patient’s experience of physical pain. Terminally ill patients are frequently confronted with severe existential symptoms and spiritual distress that challenge palliative care providers. This presentation will provide participants the opportunity to discuss the concept of existential suffering and how we can best support patients and families.
