About this Event

Lives in Transit: The movement of people, ideas and identities through history.

Nottingham Trent University’s Postgraduate History Conference team are pleased to announce this year’s conference, to be held on Wednesday 13th November 2019.

According to The UN Refugee Agency’s most recent data there are currently 70.8 million people around the world who have been displaced. Of these, 25.9 million are refugees, over half of whom are under 18 years old and 3.5 million are those seeking asylum. Thirty people per minute are forcibly displaced. This time of international flux, with the rise of nationalist ideologies and identity politics, is a unique juncture for the historiographical examination of the movement of people, their lives, their ideas and identities.

Researchers may choose to consider how movement is defined in relation to the physical movement of people or the virtual movement of ideas, concepts and religions etc.

Possible themes include but are not limited to:

- Migration, immigration and the pursuit of a ‘new life’.

- Crusades, pilgrimage and the movement of religious ideas.

- War, evacuation and the forcible movement of people.

- The transmission of ideas.

- Travel, globalisation and economic migration.

- Refugees and migrants as ‘the other’.

We would like to invite papers from postgraduate researchers from a variety of disciplines, and at all stages in their research. Additionally, we invite MA and MRes students to submit proposals - these can either be 20 minute papers or they may choose to submit a shorter, 10 minute paper. We also welcome proposals for themed panels, whether from one subject area or from individual institutions. There will also be a ‘New Researchers’ panel with an opportunity for new Postgraduate Researchers to share their thesis concepts within a 5 minute slot.

Abstracts of 200 - 250 words should be sent to the Conference Team at ntuhistpg@outlook.com by Friday 20th September.

If you have any questions regarding the conference, please do not hesitate to contact the Conference Team at the email address above.
