About this Event

"Notoriously Inspiring" 5-day Painting Workshop

Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan

Friday, June 26 to Tuesday, June 30, 2020

(NOTE: the $400 fee showing in the ticket area is a Deposit only. For package fee, including tuition, accommodation and more, scroll to bottom.)

We are fascinated with the idea of the Prairies with its generous skies, clarity of light and spaciousness. We think we are familiar with it, but do we really know what the heartland has to offer us as artists?

Do you ache to be inspired by a new experience—and to be able to paint or sketch in a bold and direct way? This workshop will help you find your own expression, whether you’re an experienced painter, or just beginning your painting exploration.

Inspired Learning: You’ll explore through field trips the built and natural environment of the historic city of Moose Jaw and Wakamow Valley, sketching exteriors and interiors of some of Moose Jaw’s notable heritage buildings as well as the stunning landscape of the river valley before returning to the Studio with guided instruction to work up your sketches and reference photos into expressive paintings.

Instructor Val Nelson will demonstrate techniques for acrylic and oil and provide instruction using the surrounding land- and city-scape as subject matter; to help you with your personal perspective that you’ll be able to use for both plein air sketching and studio. Val is an accomplished painter specializing in expressive, dramatic interiors of historic buildings. Val will give tips in expressively capturing the subject matter with charcoal, demonstrating techniques and skills that you can use for all travel sketching now and in the future. Returning to the Studio each day, Val’s guidance will continue with demonstrations of bold colour and loose form, with the goal of helping you find your own notoriously creative style.

Rejuvenation: You will stay 5 nights at the luxurious Temple Gardens Hotel and Spa, conveniently located one block from the Studio. We will relax and “take the waters” at the renowned geothermal pools, visit the famed Tunnels of Moose Jaw, and imbibe handcrafted wines at the Prairie Bee Meadery.

Location: This 5-day program will be held in the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre in the heart of downtown amidst cafes, restaurants, and unique shops. Ease into Moose Jaw’s small town vibe as you meet friendly residents and enjoy the convenience of walking only a few blocks from the Hotel and Studio to most field trips and extracurricular activities. Situated in the warm, dry climate of Southern Saskatchewan, Moose Jaw embraces its colourful Roaring Twenties past, branding itself as Canada’s Most Notorious City. Thirty-two designated heritage buildings and a well-preserved Main Street make it an exceptional place to capture the feel of an authentic Western town.

Emerge enriched by an authentic Prairie experience, new perspectives on your painting, and camaraderie with your fellow participants.

Package: EARLY BIRD $1,890 (plus applicable taxes)
