Join our Waterways Community Clean Ups and Help Keep Plastic and Other Garbage Out of the Sea!

About this Event

Be part of the solution and join Oakland Zoo in Taking Action for whales, sea turtles, shorebirds and all native Wildlife! Volunteers meet at the Zoo and ride the Zoo Shuttle to a local bay-destined waterway to remove trash, including the ever-abundant plastics that harms and kills our seabirds, turtles, fish and more.

Meet at the Oakland Zoo's Lower Entrance at 9:00am; shuttle departs at 9:15am sharp for cleanup site.

Location of cleanup will be a different urban watershed habitat in Oakland.Participants will return to Oakland Zoo between 12:00pm and 12:30pm.

We will provide gloves and safety equipment. Bring a water bottle, snack, and sunscreen. Dress in comfortable layers.

Who can participate?

  • Anyone 8 years and older may participate.
  • One adult chaperone is required for every 8 child volunteers, 15 years and younger.
  • Youth 16-18 may participate without a chaperone, but must have their parent or guardian sign the Volunteer Liability Release Forms before they can volunteer.

What forms will I need?

  • All participants must complete and sign the Volunteer Liability Release form.
  • All participants must complete and sign the Adopt a Spot Waiver and Liability Release form.
  • All youth under 18 must have their parent or guardian complete and sign BOTH forms prior to volunteering.
  • Volunteers are encouraged to complete these forms in advance to ease the check in process. All forms must be completed before any individual may volunteer.

What will we do?

  • We will be beautifying local waterways and public spaces by picking up litter.
  • The projects are 100% outdoors.
  • Have fun!

When do I arrive, where do I go, and where do I park?

  • Please arrive by 9am at Oakland Zoo's Lower Entrance. The shuttle will leave promptly at 9:15am.
  • Drive in through the Zoo’s parking gate at 9777 Golf Links Rd.
  • If the parking arm is down, take a ticket from the kiosk to lift the arm. You will not be charged for parking, but you must take a ticket to raise the arm.
  • If the parking up is up, drive through. You will not be charged for parking.
  • You will park in the Lower Lot and walk up to the Lower Entrance ramp.
  • Volunteers should leave all valuables at home. Please remember to lock personal items in your car trunks and lock your cars. There will NOT be a secure place to store items when we arrive at the clean up location.

What should I wear and bring?

  • Please dress for the weather, which can range from very warm to very cold and rainy.
  • Bring hats, sun protection, layers, sturdy close-toed shoes that can get dirty, gloves, a water bottle, and a snack.
  • Close-toed shoes with good grip are required.
  • We will provide tools and gloves.

When do we end?

  • The shuttle return to the Zoo between 12:00pm and 12:30pm.

At the end of the event, volunteers will receive:

  • A wrist band which allows for free parking and admission to the Zoo for the rest of the day. It is only valid for the day of volunteer service.
  • If you lose your wristband, you will need to pay the $10 parking fee when you leave.
  • With the wrist band, volunteers will also have the opportunity to take one ride on the train and the skyride (when running) on the day of their volunteer service.
