Event description

Description

In this year's Write Now! conference, Kylene Beers will take us on a deep dive into the Three Big Questions and the Notice and Note Signposts for fiction and nonfiction. The conference, focused on reading, will address issues across all grade levels and help you think about how you can help all students, but especially your most resistant students, become empowered learners and attentive readers.

About the presenter:
Kylene Beers, Ed.D., is an award-winning educator and the author or co-author of When Kids Can’t Read/What Teachers Can Do; Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading; Elements of Literature, the literature textbook read by middle school and high school students across the US, and, most recently, of Disrupting Thinking: Why How We Read Matters.

Kylene began her teaching career in 1979 in the Alief School District, outside of Houston, Texas. Since then, she has become an internationally known and highly respected authority in literacy education. In 2008-2009 she served as President of the National Council of Teachers of English and in 2011 she received an NCTE Leadership Award. She has published numerous articles in state and national journals, served as a consultant to the National Governors Association Education Committee, was the editor of the national literacy journal Voices from the Middle, taught in the College of Education at the University of Houston, held a reading research position in the Comer School Development Program at Yale University School of Medicine, and served as the Senior Reading Advisor to the Reading and Writing Project at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Kylene is now a consultant to schools, nationally and internationally, addressing literacy improvement across grade levels.

About the conference:
The Write Now! conference honors the legacy of Donald Graves, our first speaker almost 20 years ago. This year's conference is presented through a partnership with our new fiscal agent, VSA Arts of NH, and the Conway School District, and supported in part by Booksource.

There is no charge for SAU 9 educators and staff. Cost for all other registrants is $45, which includes breakfast and lunch.

At the conference Heinemann professional books will be sold at 30% off list, and any Heinemann professional book not available for sale can be ordered at the same discount and shipped for free. Booksource information will be available, with lots of free goodies throughout the day.

Note to participants:
We are proud that the Don Graves Write Now! conference has brought exceptional professional development opportunities to northern New Hampshire since 2000, always at an extraordinarily low price. In addition to the incomparable Don Graves, our keynote speakers have included Linda Rief, Lucy Calkins, Georgia Heard, Lester Laminack, and Kelly Gallagher. We are honored that Kylene Beers plans to join us this year.

Please note that Penny retired from the Conway School District in June and Frumie from the Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire in the fall, so we have no office help of any kind and are offering the conference because it matters to us and, we hope, to you. If circumstances cause a disruption in the plans of our speaker, we have a back-up plan. It will be a great conference, we promise. Please understand, we will not be able to offer refunds.
