Description

What keeps people from embracing poetry? Were they taught it in a way that made it seem an intellectual puzzle they weren’t smart enough to solve? Did the poetry they were exposed to seem irrelevant to their lives? The Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Program will share an approach for engaging newcomers with poetry that reduces their fear and values their individual response. The program has introduced thousands of teachers and students to the pleasure of reading and hearing poetry.

The Dodge Poetry Program’s approach to introducing people to poetry focuses on the pure pleasure of encountering it without any pressure to perform as a teacher, student or writer. The approach presented applies to groups of any age, educational level or cultural background, and can reinvigorate the most experienced teacher as well as introduce the beginner to the pleasure and personal connection that can come from sharing poetry with others in a safe, non-threatening environment.
