Notary Public Duties
The Notaries Act was amended August 1, 2020 to include a Paralegal application as Notary Public in the same manner as Lawyers for a lifetime appointment (LSO). This appointment is important and involves a number of legal requirements that all Lawyers and Paralegals should be informed and competent in. Attendees will examine the Notaries Act including the application process and the responsibilities of a Notary in Ontario; be provided with precedent documents to organize the Paralegal’s “notarized documents” file as recommended; participate in a mock scenario notarizing documents for a client with precedents for certified true copies and notarial copies provided; discuss supplies including seals; and discuss liability and E&O insurance issues. An updated step-by-step guide will be provided to all attendees. *New: Updates regarding remote verification and electronic/remote commissioning; most recent changes to Apostille requirements/exemptions will be discussed; possible online commissioning and mobile notary opportunities and the question of online notarizing finally answered and enforced. An opportunity throughout the CPD will be provided for questions and answers on ZOOM via a monitored chat feature.
This program contains 3 LSO Professionalism Hours.
