Event description

Description

Where are you from?

It might seem like an innocent question, but that isn't always the case – especially if you're an immigrant.

Not Quite: Asian American by Law, Asian Woman by Desire is a one-woman show, written and performed by college professor-turned storyteller and performing artist Ada Cheng. CultureALL is pleased to partner with the Des Moines Social Club in bringing this artist to Des Moines.

In this performance, Ada uses personal stories, monologues, and characters to explore her journey as an immigrant woman from East Asia. Stories center around the intersection of race, immigration, gender, and sexuality. Ada uses “not quite” to connect three main themes: meanings of home, the fractured yet intersectional nature of Asian American identity, and the perils of living in today’s America for immigrant women of color.

The performance is 45 minutes. It will be followed by a 30-minute audience talkback and discussion.

Please Note: The artist intends this show to be an artistic intervention and an intellectual challenge to current politics and debates. Her views may seem controversial to some audience members, so prepare to come with an open mind, an open heart, and a willingness to listen to a perspective that may be different from your own.

Tickets will also be available for purchase at the door on the night of the performance.

About The Artist

Originally from Taiwan, Dr. Ada Cheng is a college professor-turned storyteller. After studying at Chicago’s famed Second City Comedy Club, she left her job as a tenured professor of Sociology at DePaul University to follow her dreams of becoming a professional performing artist. About the Show

Ada Cheng debuted Not Quite with SOLO Chicago Festival (Three Cats Productions) in January 2017. In addition to performing it different venues and universities in the Chicago area, as well as events including the National Storytelling Conference in Kansas City, the Capital Fringe Festival in Washington DC, the Minnesota Fringe Festival, and the Boulder International Fringe Festival.

“Cheng is captivating throughout, fierce, angry and energizing. You can’t take your eyes off her. Her story demands to be heard.” – Washington Post

“So, again: see this show. Theater works best when there’s this alchemical exchange: your attention for the artist’s message. Your attention to this woman and this story – at this time, particularly – will be more than repaid.” – DC Metro Arts
