Description

The International Centre for Classroom Research presents:

Professor Anna Sfard

Not Just So Stories: Practising Discursive Research for the Sake of Educational Practice

Conceptualising research as an activity of telling useful stories about chosen aspects of reality raises many questions, but also leads to important insights about possible ways of conducting investigations and about their different DOs and DON’Ts. In this colloquium, I will discuss all these, first in general, and then in the context of discursive research, one that grows out of the assumption about the unity of thinking and communicating. I will illustrate my claims with examples coming from past and ongoing discursive studies on school learning.

Professor Anna Sfard teaches in the Department of Education at the University of Haifa, Israel. She is a scholar of international acclaim in the area of learning sciences. In her research, she focuses on the relationship between thinking and communication, and she investigates both within the context of mathematics and its learning. Professor Sfard is visiting Melbourne for six weeks as a Miegunyah Distinguished Visiting Fellow based at the International Centre for Classroom Research (ICCR), Melbourne Graduate School of Education.
