Event description

Description

Did you grow up in a kosher deli?

…or do you not know how to pronounce ‘knish’?

Do you cook just like your grandma?

…or have you never fried a latke in your life?

Do you want to rediscover the recipes of your ancestors?

…or do you want to discover them for the very first time?

If you said yes to any of these, this class is for you!

Every other Sunday, five pairs of students will learn to bake bagels, simmer soup, ferment kosher dills, and so much more. Each class includes three recipes, and will be themed around an upcoming holiday or other event. The focus is on Ashkenazi recipes from the former Russian Empire, but we will also account for the role immigration to the US and Canada played in shaping our cuisine.

No cooking experience is required! This class is for beginners and experts—anyone with time and interest is welcome. No payment is required! Ingredients are fully funded through Brown RISD Hillel. No equipment is required! We will be using Hillel’s full kosher kitchen to prepare our meals. Short-term commitment is required! You only sign up for one class at a time.

The first class is Sunday, September 24, from 5-8 pm. Focusing on Yom Kippur and Break-fast, we’ll learn the process of making a cold spread for the most anticipated meal of the year. Each pair will make eight bagels, a noodle kugel, and a half-pound of gravlax (shortcut lox). Sign up individually or in pairs here—registration is first-come, first served.
