Viva Farms, WSDA Farm to School, and the Washington State Farm to School Network are organizing a school garden teacher training and farm to school gathering in Mount Vernon! School gardeners, teachers, school nutrition staff, educators, farmers, students, parents, childcare providers, and anyone else interested in farm to school in the region are encouraged to attend.

Learn from other people in your region working on farm to school, in school gardens, network and build partnerships, talk about how to grow local farm to school efforts, and more. This event will be eligible for teacher Clock Hours through Skagit Valley College.

Gathering Agenda

The event is broken up into three sections. When you RSVP, you can indicate which section(s) you plan to attend:

8:30am-11am: Garden educator and teacher training

Intro to farm to school regionally and in Washington State
Farm to School Quick Talks:

  • Keynote: Laura Plaut, Common Threads Farm (Whatcom Co)
  • Farm to Cafeteria: Amy Frye, Boldly Grown Farm (Skagit Co) and Bethany Fong, Northwest School (Seattle, WA)
  • School lunch and culinary education: Liz Varvaro, San Juan Island School District
  • STEM and school gardens: Elizabeth Schmitz, Environmental and Sustainability Education Program Supervisor, OSPI Learning and Teaching

11am-1pm: Farm to school & gardener networking mixer & lunch

  • Teachers, farmers, gardeners, food service staff, agriculture and nutrition educators, childcare providers, and anyone interested in farm to school encouraged to join us for lunch. We also will be gathering input on priorities for the Washington State Farm to School Network.

1pm-3pm: Break-out sessions with training, discussion and networking on:

  • School garden best practices: Sharing best practices, ideas, Q&A and skill-sharing for teachers & educators
  • Garden curriculum development: How to better use and incorporate school gardens in the daily life & fabric of a school in support of teachers, students, required learning objectives, STEM & NGSS
  • Nutrition staff, farmers, and meal providers: Join us for training and networking on local food in school meals & childcare and ECE settings! CEU documentation will be provided for school nutrition staff.





Viva Farms is a non-profit Farm Business Incubator and Training Program established in 2009. They operate two locations in Skagit County Washington, and one in King County Washington. We lower the barriers for beginning farmers, and create the opportunity for success. Viva has educated over 700 small farmers (150+ Spanish speakers) in sustainable organic farming, and is currently incubating 24 independent farm businesses (7 Latino owned).
