Description

Northwest Mallet Camp 2018

June 25-27, Monday-Wednesday, 10:30am-4:30pm

The Northwest Mallet Camp is the greater Puget Sound region's premier Mallet Percussion Summer Camp for students ages 10-19. Since 2010, the NW Mallet Camp has offered musical instruction and inspiration for young percussionists in the form of a day camp with classes and performances. Featuring the area's top percussion performers and teachers, this year's camp will focus on Mallet Ensembles and Timpani Techniques and Repertoire. Guest Artists will be announced soon!

Students in 2018 will be split into appropriate age/level groups and will have small group sessions on techniques, repertoire and music theory/ear training. Masterclasses and performances will be presented to the entire student body in a lab class/informal setting. Although there is a focus on keyboard mallet percussion, other concert percussion instruments and timpani will be a part of the daily activities. Students do not have to be 'mallet experts' to attend, but rather, have an eagerness to learn new mallet techniques and repertoire or improve their already existing level of performance.

GUEST ARTISTS for 2018 will be Matt Drumm, Symphony Tacoma timpanist and Paul Hansen, 5th Avenue Theatre percussionist. We welcome Mr. Drumm in a masterclass to perform and discuss modern timpani solo music, orchestral timpani music, taking timpani auditions, and his American style of technique. Paul Hansen will also be joining us in a masterclass featuring Musical Pit Percussion set-ups and performance. Don't miss your chance to hear his "Tales from the Pit" and learn what makes him tick!

The 2018 camp faculty will include Prof. Jeff Lund (University of Puget Sound faculty and Rainier Symphony Music Director) Dr. Kendra McLean (private instructor in the Federal Way area,Tacoma Youth Sym coach, Bellevue Youth sym coach) and Dr. Memmi Ochi (Seattle area marimbist and private teacher).

The complete registration forms are available at www.aputnammallets.com and more information can be found facebook.com/NorthwestMalletCamp or via email from the camp director, Amy Putnam. All forms need to be completed before the first day of camp. You will receive these additional forms and more up-to date information via email after the online registration is completed.

In addition to fantastic instruction and inspiring performances, students will also receive a free set of A.PUTNAM MALLETS marimba mallets or a pair of timpani mallets for registering. All music for the camp is provided in the form of a printed coursepack and warm-ups which are emailed in advance of the camp for students to prepare.

The 2018 NW Mallet Camp is proudly sponsored by the Yamaha Corporation, A. Putnam Mallets, Symphony Tacoma, The Tacoma Youth Symphony Association and the Tacoma Concert Band.
