Description

African Americans continue to be disproportionately affected by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) epidemic

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, African American comprise 26.8% of Alabama’s population. However African Americans accounted for 70% of all newly diagnosed HIV in 2016 and are 64.3% of all person living with HIV as of December 31, 2016. (Alabama State Department of Health- Brief Facts on African –American and HIV in Alabama).

Yes, those numbers are alarming. But, HIV is 100% preventable and we can decrease the rate of infections in our community.

The HIV epidemic is not one that we want to discuss, but we must.

The Health Ministry has partnered with UAB Center for AIDS Research to provide Training on HIV in our community. This Training is free.

Please contact me if either of you have any questions.
