Event description
Join us to learn about changing North Shore settlement patterns and strategies for improved immigrant inclusion in services.

About this Event

Migration is a reality of our times. As diversity increases in our local North Shore communities, it is important to consider how data about migration trends can be used to inform service delivery planning into the future.

The goal of the day is to learn about emerging North Shore settlement patterns and explore strategies for embedding more evidence-based responses in our work as service providers. The discussions will also inform how migration and demographic data may shape NSIIP's future strategic priorities and directions.

Participants will hear a keynote address from Daniel Hiebert, UBC Professor of Geography, regarding his research around superdiversity data and the implications for service planning and delivery.

Participants will also have the opportunity to participate in one of the following three workshops:

  • Seniors & Our Aging North Shore community: More immigrants are aging than ever before. How do we understand the experiences and needs of aging immigrants and what are some promising practices for service providers in response to this growing community?
  • Early Years (0 - 6 years) - Planning for a new generation: A growing number of young families are settling on the North Shore. How do we build our understanding of the needs and access barriers for newcomer families? What innovative programming opportunities could service providers consider?
  • The Changing Faces of Migration: The number of temporary status residents living on the North Shore is increasing. How do we understand the experiences and needs of international students, visitors, refugee claimants and temporary workers? What are the pathways to permanency for migrants? What are the policy and service implications?

The workshops will offer participants a chance to learn about promising practices in the area of inclusive service delivery and build networks for the purpose of enhanced service coordination.

This event is for North Shore community partners involved in planning and decision-making around services and front-line staff working directly with immigrants.
