Event description

Description

We invite you to redux of a mobile workshop hosted at the 2017 National Walking Summit, first conducted on September 13th for a group of 30 walking advocates.

[Proceeds will benefit ongoing research & programming of the Minneapolis Alley Initiative for Neighborhood Stimulation.]

The Minneapolis Warehouse District, including the North Loop neighborhood, makes an attractive statement for urban revitalization in a historic district. It also benefits from its proximity to downtown. However, a commercial district is only as valuable as the sum of its parts. Public alleys, often overlooked, offer a window into elements that adversely affect a person on foot, despite the level of redevelopment and revitalization seen from the street. At its core, missed opportunities in the public alley prompt rethinking of tactics to maximize safety and value in our urban public space.

The format will focus on three activities for engaging the interior block. First, participants will tour public alley segments and explore how the confined environment of the alley creates blind spots that impact public health and safety. Next, the group will identify opportunities in that environment for a user to feel safe and engaged, particularly through commerce and recreation. Last, we will solicit participants to re-imagine the alley surface, using elements that constitute amenities in more acknowledged public spaces.

Ultimately, the workshop will prompt users of the alley space to shift perceptions of what creates an unsafe environment, to realize how much it resembles what we value in our street experience, and to develop a lens for identifying spaces that require positive reinvention. Users will subsequently appreciate commercial alleys as shared streets for all users, and understand how these corridors may facilitate greater interaction with the city block when our values are applied to these otherwise hidden spaces.
