Event description

Description

The North Florida TPO and the First Coast Section of the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association will host the 2017 Safe Streets Summit on October 25th. Visit www.nflsafestreetssummit.com

Walkshop - 8:30 to 9:45AM

The purpose of the North Florida Safe Streets Summit “Walkshop” is to give participants some insight into the experience of getting around Jacksonville without a car. The group will break up into teams to complete a transportation challenge: travel to an assigned location in the city using any mode(s) of transportation except for a personal vehicle and return to the starting point (the Doubletree hotel). Teams will be timed—the fastest team wins. During travel, all rules of the road must be followed exactly. This means, as a pedestrian, you must cross within crosswalks and only when the pedestrian signal says “WALK”. Participants will be encouraged to take note of specific difficulties they encounter or deficiencies in the transportation system that they observe. We will provide JTA bus passes to any team members who choose to travel by bus. We hope that participants will walk away from this experience having learned something about the difficulties that people who depend on walking, biking, and public transit face every day, and that they will share their experience with other Summit attendees later in the day.

Registration begins at 9AM
