About this Event

North Country Blue (www.northcountryblue.com) emerged in the fall of 2017 and has quickly established itself as one of California’s freshest and finest bluegrass bands – even though most of its members are just 15 years old and still in high school. The band combines fresh takes on the traditional bluegrass canon, thoughtful covers of challenging modern material, and a number of startlingly mature and well-crafted originals. Their instrumental skills and beautiful vocal blends have caught the attention of audiences throughout California and beyond, and the band’s first full-length album was released in 2019 to considerable acclaim: International Bluegrass Music Association award-winner Jon Hartley Fox wrote that the band’s debut recording “feels to me like an important beginning . . . . It’s an assured, confident and very accomplished first step and a heartening dispatch from the next generation of bluegrass.” The band’s appearance in the Devil Mountain Coffee House series will mark its first performance in Walnut Creek – and, for the band’s fiddler, Tessa Schwartz, a return to where her musical journey began. A Walnut Creek native, Tessa played her first public notes at the age of 5 with her family bluegrass band, Oak Grove, at the downtown Walnut Creek farmers market, and then played at that market and at Shadelands for several years with her family before their move to Berkeley in 2013.

Joining the band for this concert will be noted mandolinist and bassist Sharon Gilchrist, who has worked with the band extensively and produced their album. A highly-respected professional bluegrass musician and teacher, Sharon has played with Tony Rice, Peter Rowan, Keith Little and John Reischman, among others, and she handles the upright bass duties for this performance.
