Duff Fire Science and Management Workshop

Wednesday, June 26, 2019

8:15 - 3:30 PM ET.

Weymouth Woods-Sandhills Nature Preserve

Southern Pines, NC 28387

Hosted by the Southern Fire Exchange in cooperation with North Carolina State Parks and Recreation, the US Forest Service, Tall Timbers Research Station, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources

This workshop is sponsored by the National Wild Turkey Federation

Cost: $30.00  SAF CFE Credit Expected

Register TODAY to learn about:

  • What is duff? What is it made of? How does it accumulate? Why does it kill trees?
  • What can you do with sites that have heavy duff loads?
  • How do you minimize duff impacts on mature trees?

Event Summary:

Join us as we bridge the gap between science and management when it comes to issues related to duff in southeastern upland ecosystems. This workshop will be a true exchange designed to expose natural resource managers to useful scientific studies and expose scientists to issues and concerns from the perspective of the resource managers. Presentations will include the latest information related to pine mortality associated with duff accumulations and management strategies for mitigating tree losses due to duff build up. Check out the draft workshop agenda here.

After a lunch sponsored by the National Wild Turkey Federation, we will visit a nearby longleaf stand with heavy duff accumulation to discuss strategies, science and options for management success. The field tour will start at approximately 1:00 PM ET and the event will conclude no later than 3:30 PM ET.

Event Registration:

Due to space, there are a limited number of registrations available.  Pre-registration for the workshop is required.

Southern Fire Exchange

The Southern Fire Exchange is a regional wildland fire science communication program and a member of the national Fire Science Exchange Network, funded by the Joint Fire Science Program.

Representing 11 southern states, we work with numerous partners throughout the region to increase the use of available fire science, facilitate discussions about the relevance of research results and future research needs, and connect fire managers and researchers.

We share fire science research results and information with natural resource managers, landowners, and scientists by offering a variety of resources and events:
  • Newsletters, fact sheets, and research briefs
  • Webinars, live and archived for viewing at anytime
  • Workshops and field tours throughout the Southeast
