Event description

Description

Greenbelt Alliance is going to the birds at Cemetery Marsh. Turkey may be the bird on our minds just before Thanksgiving, but the marshes and wetlands neighboring Rush Creek Open Space Preserve attract many wonderful migratory waterbirds this time of year.

We'll be on the lookout for rafts of ducks, including pintails, canvasbacks, shovelers, green-winged teals, gadwalls, and buffleheads. We'll also search for shorebirds such as avocets, stilts, egrets, and herons.

TOTAL DISTANCE
This is an easy 3 mile hike.

LEADER
Suzanne Weakley

WEATHER POLICY
Rain cancels.

COST
Free; RSVP required.

WHERE TO MEET
We'll assemble at the Binford Road entrance the Rush Creek Open Space Preserve, near the intersection of Binford Road and Atherton Avenue.

Northbound on U.S. 101, take the last Novato exit (Atherton Ave./San Marin Dr.). Turn right (east) and after 1/10th of a mile, take the first left turn off of Atherton Avenue onto Binford Road, which is the frontage road that runs along the east side of U.S. 101. Drive around the corner to the right. The trailhead is on your right. Park along the side of the road.

NOTES
Bring binoculars, a bird book, and a camera with a telephoto lens. Also, bring lunch, water, snacks, dress in layers, and wear good hiking shoes. There are no restrooms at the trailhead; however, there are two Starbucks not too far away. Questions? Email Ken Lavin or phone him at 415-543-6771 x321.
