Event description

Description

Nonviolence Acts: The Peace Play Festival! is the culminating production of The Manton Avenue Project’s Play-it- Again program, an after-school playwriting course held at MAP’s Clubhouse in Olneyville. 4th grade playwrights have each written a play about the courage it takes to make nonviolent choices in our lives. For this project, The Manton Avenue Project is proud to be partnering with the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence. We also were honored to be joined by guests Casey Seymour Kim who led a workshop about the beloved community, and Joe Wilson, Jr. who performed powerful excerpts from speeches by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and led a lively discussion about how each of us can be heroes in our communities. These workshops and visits will inspire the plays, and the resulting production will be directed and performed by local professional theatre artists.

This is the second production of The Manton Avenue Project’s 2017-2018 season, which is supported by a grant from The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, The Rhode Island Council on the Humanities, Providence Rotary Charities Foundation, The Ira and Anna Galkin Charitable Trust, The Fund of the Providence Shelter for Colored Children, The June Rockwell Levy Foundation, TACO/White Family Foundation, United Way of Rhode Island, as well as our individual donors and sustaining members.
