Nonprofit Finance Fundamentals Part 1: Tools to Promote Financial Adaptability— 2017 Six-Part Webinar Series

This series first prepares participants with the basics, including an explanation of nonprofit financial systems, and a crash course in reading financial statements. Participants are then introduced to key management tools that allow leaders to plan proactively as they support their communities amid funding uncertainty.

The 60-minute webinars described below are offered as a full financial management curriculum, or can be chosen a la carte for organizations seeking to address specific business challenges.

1. The Nonprofit Landscape: Adapting in Times of Uncertainty

February 14, 2017 at 3:00 PM Eastern/12:00 PM Pacific

Even in an uncertain funding and policy landscape, nonprofit leaders can take important steps to prepare their organizations for change. This webinar covers our sector’s upside-down “money rules,” such as revenue restrictions and disjointed business models, and the keys to financial stability – which come from the ability to make nimble, data-informed decisions and a willingness to adapt, all with a clear understanding of your constituents, community, funders, partners, and market.

2. Assessing Nonprofit Financial Health

February 21, 2017 at 3:00 PM Eastern/12:00 PM Pacific

To make good decisions, leaders need accurate, up-to-date, and clear financial information—and the ability to interpret and use this data. The first step is a comprehensive understanding of baseline financial indicators and health. This webinar explores the fundamentals of nonprofit finance, equipping leaders and managers to assess their organizations’ financial position through interpreting income statements, balance sheets, and other financial statements.

3. Budgeting as a Communication Tool

February 28, 2017 at 3:00 PM Eastern/12:00 PM Pacific

The budget is an essential tool when charting your organization’s future path. This webinar provides a review of key budget terms and concepts and demystifies the budgeting process by focusing on the essential nonprofit budget, which clearly depicts each organization’s financial story. This webinar helps you prepare a budget that appropriately communicates your organization’s financial needs, and concludes with more advanced budgeting concepts such as covering full costs and balance sheet items.

4. Assessing Program Profitability

March 7, 2017 at 3:00 PM Eastern/12:00 PM Pacific

Every program impacts your organization's bottom line. Making informed decisions about critical issues like hiring or fundraising requires a clear understanding of each program's profit or loss and how it fits with other programs. The NFF Program Profitability Model provides a clear-sighted way for nonprofit managers to answer these questions as they work to adapt in real time. Through case studies, NFF explains how participants can use a program economic assessment to make adjustments and improve financial health for maximum mission impact.

5. Planning for a Range of Scenarios

March 14, 2017 at 3:00 PM Eastern/12:00 PM Pacific

Scenario planning can be a powerful way to prepare for what lies ahead, particularly when the future seems uncertain. At NFF, we balance exploration and dialogue with a tools-driven approach. This webinar introduces several planning methods to assess revenue and expenses. Key topics include risk assessment and how to prepare for multiple outcomes in one or multiple years.

6. Managing to a Dashboard

March 21, 2017 at 3:00 PM Eastern/12:00 PM Pacific

Increasingly popular among nonprofit boards, a dashboard is a tool for communicating with key stakeholders and leadership about success related to mission and outcomes, staffing, and resources. This webinar discusses how to engage in thoughtful and relevant conversations about your nonprofit’s financial situation, needs, challenges, and opportunities before reaching a crisis point. Participants will explore two types of organizational dashboards that help to measure progress against goals and manage uncertainty.
