Event description
This course goes beyond the essentials of nonprofit board service to explore the challenges and opportunities that come with board lead

About this Event

Join us to learn:

  • the three modes of governance and when best to function in each
  • what it takes to turn a “working board” into a “governing board”
  • how to navigate complicated conflicts of interest
  • best practices for succession planning and executive leadership transitions
  • leading the board through major organizational change
  • system leadership at the board level, and more!

You’ll gain real-life insights and solutions to your board’s most pressing issues from fellow board leaders and the course instructor, plus a variety of useful and customizable tools and resources.

This course is ideal for:

  • current board members who are thinking about, or have been elected to, a leadership role on their board
  • past attendees of Mission Capital’s Board Essentials who want to understand board service at a deeper level
  • nonprofit executives who want to improve their working relationship with board leadership

FACILITATOR

Ann Starr has been a part of the Mission Capital community for nearly 14 years. Prior to her current work as Director of Learning & Leadership, she has served as nonprofit member, volunteer, and guest faculty on the fund development committee.

Prior to joining the Mission Capital team in 2018, Ann was Managing Director at Forklift Danceworks, an innovative performing arts organization. She has also served at Development Director for Texas Appleseed and was Director of the St. Edward’s Fund at St. Edward’s University. Ann holds a BA in Education from Kent State University and a Master of Arts in Human Services from St. Edward’s University.

She loves living in Austin with her husband, Stephen Beasley, and their two smart and kind sons, Micah and Vaughn. At the end of the day, Ann often realized she ate tacos for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and is quite happy about that.
