Event description
Songcrafting Workshop with Noel Paul Stookey and George Emlen

About this Event

Longtime friends and collaborators Noel and George will offer songwriting techniques and perspectives to aspiring songwriters of all levels and genres. Participants should bring instruments as appropriate and be prepared to develop song ideas with the class and one-on-one with Noel and George. There will be time for individual work and the possibility of a "performance" of completed songs or works in progress at the end of the session.

..............

Noel Paul Stookey has been helping to change the world, one song and one key social concept at a time since Peter, Paul and Mary burst onto the music scene in the 1960s. The multi-platinum-selling group took the music world by storm, performing at the civil rights March on Washington in 1963 and at political rallies all over the world, with influential songs like ‘Blowing in the Wind,’ and ‘If I had a Hammer.’ As an independent musician he passionately believes in bringing the spiritual into the practice of daily life. Funny, irreverently reverent, thoughtful, compassionately passionate, his voice is known all across this land: from the 'Wedding Song' to 'In These Times'.

Noel still performs with Peter Yarrow (Mary passed away in 2009), and solo. Much of his newer, compositions continue to address the major issues of these times; from climate change to immigration to gun control.

George W. Emlen is a conductor, composer, arranger, songleader and music educator in Maine and Massachusetts. For 32 years he was music director of Revels, a Boston-based, national performing arts organization best known for annual performances of The Christmas Revels, a rich and joyful celebration of the winter solstice.

A graduate of Dartmouth College, George earned an advanced degree in choral conducting at the New England Conservatory. In Maine he founded and conducted the Acadia Choral Society, while also conducting the Oratorio Chorale and the Mount Desert Summer Chorale. George has been on the faculty of the New England Conservatory, where he directed the Conservatory Camerata; Lesley University in the Creative Arts in Learning program; the College of the Atlantic, and the University of Maine. He also taught and conducted at Noble and Greenough School and was music director at the Putney School.

In recent years George has worked with Bobby McFerrin in the vocal improvisatory genre of Circlesinging, which he incorporates into his conducting and teaching. He currently teaches a leadership course ("Conducting Your Chorus") at the Harvard Kennedy School for senior executives in state and local public office.

George's compositions and arrangements are published by Lawson-Gould, Thorpe, Lorenz, and Redwing Press.
